The Supreme Court on Friday directed Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to submit details of all tax evaders. The FBR was given this task during the resumption of hearing on International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) container scam case. The three-member bench was led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. The court gave 15 days to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to show progress in the container case by filing references against those implicated in the ISAF scam.

Rana Zahid, Additional Prosecutor NAB, DG NAB Sindh Wajid Durani and Shamim Rana from FBR submitted progress report on the matter. Admonishing the FBR, the Chief Justice observed that there would be no budget deficit if Board authorities recovered all due taxes, and urged the Chairman FBR to develop a foolproof system to foil tax evaders through corrective measures. "All the markets in the country are flooded with smuggled items which destroyed local industry," the Chief Justice stated.

Filing a progress report, Shamim Rana, apprised the bench that in response to 7,972 show cause notices the FBR had received as many as 7000 Cross Border Certificates (CBCs) which, subsequently, were dispatched to concerned Collectorates of Customs, including Quetta and Port Qasim Karachi.

Submitting a progress report on NAB's behalf, Rana Zahid contended that FBR reported a total of 7972 missing ISAF containers whereas FTO reported a total of 28,000 missing containers. DG NAB Durrani stated that the FBR reports had not carried correct record of containers' exit from Pakistan. NAB sought more time to file references against the accused.

The Chief Justice stated that "in view of the FTO findings, the report had been accepted by the apex court through judicial order and direction made that let the NAB conduct a thorough and proper investigation. This does not imply that NAB authorities sit on FTO report and the accused should be confronted with contents of the report and rest of the matter is left to the trial courts". The hearing of case was adjourned till February 25.
