The Nokia Lumia 720 is the Lumia range’s new midfield general, sitting right at the heart of the range and providing the perfect mix of power, style and economy. Undoubtedly the stand-out feature given its price is the phone’s camera. Here are five key photo features of the Nokia Lumia 720.

As discussed, the Nokia Lumia 720 provides performance that most people would associate with a high-end smartphone. It has a super-sensitive 4-inch display that can be used with your gloves on (perfect for a UK winter) and a punchy 1GHz dual-core CPU.

But most impressive of all is the Nokia Lumia 720′s camera. Nokia has brought its unmatched photographic expertise on its new mid-range wonder.

Nokia Lumia 720 hands-on round-up

Here are some of the elements that make the Nokia Lumia 720 such a capable snapper.

6.7-megapixel main camera

Taking a big step up from the Nokia Lumia 520 and the Nokia Lumia 620 below it, the Nokia Lumia 720 is in possession of a 6.7-megapixel rear camera. This will result in more detailed images that can be printed out nice and big, or else cropped without shrinking the overall image size unduly.

f/1.9 aperture

This is the real stand-out feature of the Nokia Lumia 720′s camera. Its f/1.9 aperture is unusually wide for any smartphone, and the biggest in any Nokia device. Essentially, what this means is that more light is let in for each picture, resulting in quicker snaps and superior low-light performance. It should also allow for some nice depth of field effects with that oh-so-stylish blurry background ‘Bokeh’ effect -particularly when taking close-up shots.

Similar image sensor to Nokia Lumia 920

Nokia created an amazing camera for its flagship Lumia device, the Nokia Lumia 920, and it’s used its experience with that phone in the Nokia Lumia 720. This includes a very similar backside-illuminated image sensor, and a true 16:9 mode that no other handset manufacturer but Nokia can boast of.

1.3-megapixel front camera

While the rear camera will be getting most of the attention – and quite rightly so – the Nokia Lumia 720′s front-facing camera is no slouch either. In fact, it’s the best front-facing camera that Nokia has ever made, utilising as it does a staggering four physical lenses. Most front-facing lenses only use two or three. The front-facing sensor is also backside-illuminated for extra clarity.

Carl Zeiss lens

German lens manufacturer Carl Zeiss AG is one of the premier companies of its kind in the world. Over the year it’s built a formidable partnership with Nokia, producing some of the finest smartphone lenses ever made. It continues its fine work with the Nokia Lumia 720, along with the coveted Carl Zeiss stamp of approval.
