iPhone 6 and 5S production, release date hit by Foxconn exec shuffle

Apple faces the disappearance of two key executive allies at Foxconn, its primary iPhone manufacturing partner heading into the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 era. With Foxconn’s head of Apple manufacturing having been absent from the company for most of the past year and his lieutenant having departed the company, Apple is left working with a new executive hired from outside the company. The change of culture at the Asian manufacturer comes as Apple aims for a 2013 release date for both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6, with the former intended for release as soon as the end of spring.

Foxconn and Apple have worked closely on iPad and iPhone releases over the past several years, despite controversies regarding labor conditions. A number of Apple’s competitors also use the same Foxconn factories, but media attention for the labor troubles has been aimed primarily at Apple. Additionally Foxconn claimed last week that its financial slowdown was due to the fault of the iPhone 5, which is setting sales records, suggesting that Apple has begun shifting iPhone manufacturing to another factory instead, a trend which could continue with the iPhone 6.

Apple’s next two iPhones could both see release dates this year. The iPhone 5S, an enhanced version of the current iPhone, should arrive within months. The iPhone 6, a total revamp, would arrive later and could come in late 2013 or early 2014. The Foxconn issues, as Business Insider points out, could impact that timetable as Apple weighs finding friendlier partners.
