Safety concerns spark VW recall

Volkswagen Australia is expected to recall almost 26,000 vehicles after concerns about an electronic malfunction.
Affected vehicles include the Golf, Jetta, Polo, Passat and Caddy models fitted with seven-speed DSG gearboxes that were produced between June 2008 and September 2011.
'In isolated cases, an electronic malfunction in the control unit inside the gearbox mechatronics may result in a power interruption,' the Australian branch of the German carmaker said in a statement on Wednesday.
However steering, braking and 'other relevant systems' will still work, allowing the driver to manoeuvre the car to a stop.
Volkswagen cars currently being produced and sold aren't affected, the company said.
It will begin contacting owners of affected cars from July and will replace the gearboxes at no cost.
Similar recalls have already taken place in Japan, Singapore and China.
