(Relaxnews) - Additions to Nokia's Lumia range of smartphones mean that there is now a Windows Phone handset at every price point.
The Finnish phonemaker used the official opening of the Mobile World Congress Monday to reveal the Nokia Lumia 720 and Lumia 520 Windows Phone 8 handsets. The company claims that these latest editions, which will make the Microsoft operating system accessible to more consumers in more countries, will not sacrifice features or functionality for affordability.
"The momentum behind Nokia is gathering pace. The launches today reflect our commitment to broadening our devices and services portfolio to meet the demands of people and businesses around the globe," said Stephen Elop, president and chief executive officer of Nokia.
"By offering better experiences at a more affordable price we are reinventing the battle for affordable mobile devices, and Nokia has the building blocks to win."
Though quiet on the exact internal hardware specifications of either handset, both phones feature Nokia's superior camera technology -- the 720 offers a large f/1.9 aperture and exclusive Carl Zeiss optics for its rear-facing camera and a HD-quality front facing lens for video calling, while the 520 has the same lens technology found in the current flagship Lumia 920 handset.
The Lumia 720 also comes bundled with Nokia Music -- the company's iTunes competitor -- and with the addition of a snap-on plate can be charged wirelessly. Available in five bright colors, the 720 will retail for an estimated €249 (before taxes or operator discounts/subsidies) and will launch initially in Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore before rolling out globally as the year progresses.
Also available in five colors, the Lumia 520 is expected to cost €139 (before taxes or operator discounts/subsidies) and will follow the same roll-out route as its bigger brother.
The announcement brings the number of Windows Phone 8 handsets up to five. The flagship Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 devices are already available but are all sold at a premium. However, despite the price, the Lumia 920 has thus far proven to be the most popular handset with consumers willing to take a chance on the Microsoft-developer operating system rather than choosing an Android or Apple smartphone.
Nokia has a huge presence at this year's Mobile World Congress. Its CEO, Stephen Elop, is a keynote speaker and Monday's reveal is expected to be one of many over the next three days. As well as showcasing affordable handsets, Nokia is also expected to launch an aluminum-bodied flagship phone that features professional-level photo capabilities. Initially codenamed the EOS, it is expected to be called the Lumia 1000 when it launches and will replace the 920 as the company's flagship Windows Phone. Copyright (AFP RELAXNEWS), 2013.
