A leading market analyst believes that Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) will release its so-called “iTV” connected television set this year, with a special ring-shaped motion detection device that would allow for some remote control functionality with the point of a finger.
According to the latest research note from Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White, Apple will release an actual television set, instead of the current Apple TV set-top box, late in 2013, with the above “iRing” feature and the potential to “revolutionize the TV experience forever. “
While this is not the first time features of the iTV have been speculated on, this is the first mention of the iRing, which, based on White’s coordination with Apple suppliers, will be a “navigation pointer” of sorts that will supersede certain remote control functionalities through motion detection technology.
In addition, White’s research note added that the iTV will come with a second auxiliary screen. This second screen, dubbed “mini iTV”, will measure 9.7 inches, just like the full-sized iPad, and will also function as a device for video conferences, phone calls and even home security. White said that users would be able to view iTV content through this second screen anywhere in the house, and that the iTV will come with one mini iTV screen per unit, with the option to include a maximum of four screens with the basic TV set. The mini iTV, however, is not to be confused with an iPad replacement due to its lack of functionality in relation to Apple’s “flagship” tablet.
With all that taken into consideration, plus Apple’s rumored smartwatch potentially integrating with the iTV, the device may cost between $1,500 to $2,500, depending on the number of secondary iTV screens ordered and the TV’s screen size itself. According to White, screen size options may possibly include 50-, 55- and 60-inch versions.
