Apple CEO Tim Cook met with the chairman of China Mobile earlier this week to discuss the possibility of bringing the iPhone onto the nation's biggest network. Apple's sales in China more than doubled in 2010 and 2011, but China Mobile's 700 million subscribers remain largely out of reach. Following his meeting with the China Mobile exec, Cook was quoted by Xinhua as saying:

China is currently our second largest market. I believe it will become our first. I believe strongly that it will. [...] We are continuing to invest in retail stores here and will open many more over the next several years. We have some great sites selected, our manufacturing base is here, and we have incredible partners here. So it's a very very important country to us.
The iPhone is definitely a sought-after brand in China, and Cook's comments reveal that the country will play a key role in Apple's future. This was the CEO's second trip to China in the past year, and if a China Mobile partnership works out, there will surely be many more trips coming.
