Economic Daily News: CES reveals new industry trends

2013/01/12 18:09:54

The 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the largest in the show's history, has just concluded in Las Vegas.

This year's event foretold several important trends that deserve our attention.

The first is the advent of the mobile age. This was symbolized by the fact that Qualcomm Inc. CEO Paul Jacobs was invited to kick off the exhibition, replacing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who had played the role for the past several years.

In his keynote address, Jacobs said mobile devices have replaced PCs as the most popular platform for creating and consuming content and predicted that 5 billion smartphones will be sold worldwide between 2012 and 2016.

The second trend involves digital convergence, as evidenced by the introduction of a multitude of smart TV models by major manufacturers.

Another trend is the emergence of Asian brands, especially those from China.

Taiwan's industrial structure and strength still relies heavily on the PC industry. It is important for Taiwan to speed up its transformation to ensure that it can continue to play a crucial role in the mobile age.

In addition, the government should deepen and develop mobile broadband applications and services, and help Taiwanese companies reshape their competitive positioning through cooperation with academia and research institutes. (Editorial abstract -- Jan. 12, 2013)
