Google Glass Gets FCC Certification

A fresh report from Engadget says that Google Glasses, a.k.a. Google Glass Explorer Edition, has just “passed through” the FCC, or received the board’s certification for connectivity.
This device was first seen at Google I/O some time back and was exclusively sold to developers, but with FCC certification, that means it’s now clear to be sold to and purchased by the general public. The connectivity standards certified are for the Wi-Fi radio functionality on the glasses, as well as the Bluetooth 4.0 + LE radio that would allow Google Glass to be mated to a handset.
The Explorer Edition does not feature any 3G or 4G LTE connectivity, but that shouldn’t be an issue as the device can receive data from any connected handset.
In addition to the standards listed above, the Google Glass also has an “integral vibrating element that provides audio to the user via contact with the user’s head.” Based on Google’s recent patent applications, this could be the first implementation of “bone-conducting sound technology”, or the ability to play audio once a device touches a user’s body parts through his/her bones.
At the moment, Google Glass is still in the testing phase, as employees are internally testing what the company still refers to as Project Glass. So don’t expect the glasses to be out in shelves anytime soon, despite the fact that they have just “passed through.” With a little luck, this will be one of the gadgets Google will be unveiling at I/O this May, but most likely we’ll be hearing some sort of announcement with no device unveiling or seeing the glasses demonstrated yet again.
